A 5.00 gram sample of a dry mixture of potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, and potassium chloride is reacted with 0.100 liter of 2.00 molar HCl solution. A 249 milliliter sample of dry carbon dioxide gas, measured at 22 degrees Celsius and 740 torr, is obtained from this reaction. What is the percentage of potassium carbonate in the mixture? The excess hydrochloric acid is found by titration to be chemically equivalent to 86.6 milliliters of 1.5 molar sodium hydroxide. What are the percentages of potassium hydroxide and of postassium chloride in the original mixture?

First write the equation for the reaction of potassium carbonate with hydrochloric acid:

K2CO3 + 2HCl —> 2KCl + CO2 + H2O

Now determine moles of CO2 using General Gas Equation:

PV = nRT

where

P = pressure
V = volume
n = number of moles
R = Universal Gas Constant
T – temperature

Now that you have the number of moles of CO2, you can determine the moles of K2CO3 and calculate its mass using the formula mass of K2CO3.

Next determine total mass of HCl in 0.100 L of 2,00 M HCl. You can calculate the moles of acid neutralised by the moles of K2CO3; what’s left has reacted with the KOH.
